Harry Smith died on this day.
“As the frenzy of mainstream media gushes hundreds of column inches on Harry Smith during his centenary, let’s go back in time 80 years to consider his introduction to national recognition…” So begins Bret Lunsford‘s latest epistle in his absolutely essential Resounding – Harry Smith in NW Washington Substack, following up on his equally-essential Sounding for Harry Smith
We’re certainly thrilled to see the enthusiastic response to both the ongoing Whitney Museum show (until January 28) and the John Szwed biography, not to mention the recent-publication of Raymond Foye‘s edition of Harry’s annotated Naropa lectures
(and – the fecundity! – so many more things to come!)
The Whitney have in fact, coming up next month, a whole feast of Harry, My Harry, a three-day convening, a mini-festival. For more on that weekend of programming – see here
