Tonight, in New York City, the Rockefeller Center and Pomegranate Arts  present a unique and wonderful birthday celebration, hosted by performance-artist, Laurie Anderson,“on and around the skating rink” – ‘ice-skating, cupcakes, and live music and performances” (followed by an after-party, with Laurie dj-ing)

also “on the day” – Maki Namekawa and Dennis Russell Davies will present a special evening of Glass’s piano music, live from Deep Space 8k at the Ars Electronica Center in Linz with real-time digital visualizations by Cori O’Lan.  (live-streaming begins at 7PM CET / 1PM EST).

He will be continuing  his 85th birthday celebration with related events across the US in the months ahead  These include the premiere of his Symphony No. 13 at Carnegie Hall on April 5 as part of a performance by Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra and a new production of his opera Akhnaten, opening May 19  at The Metropolitan Opera.
There’s also “The Glass Etudes at Kaatsbaan” happening September 17 & 18 at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park in Tivoli, New York, featuring “world premieres of newly commissioned works by choreographers spanning generations and genres accompanied by live interpretations on piano” in celebration of Glass’ birthday.

85 – but, far from retiring – Happy 85th Birthday, Philip!
